The
University of the Philippines - Diliman Ultimate Organization, commonly
referred to as DUO, is exactly what its name implies- an organization for the
sport of Ultimate based in Diliman, Quezon City. Founded in 2009 by a handful
of students from different courses and backgrounds with a shared passion for
Ultimate, it has since evolved into a promising young group focused on the
advancement of their beloved sport in the university.
Born from the ultimate-hotbed that is the Sunken Garden, UP DUO is at the heart of a rapidly growing ultimate community housed in one of the premier universities in the country. It is the organization’s goal to harness and develop the potential of athletes from the student population and the general public as well as creating avenues for the growth of the sport through proper education and training.
As a university based organization, DUO regularly holds events within the school setting, such as weekend hat tournaments as well as a freshly concluded Diliman Cup, an inter-org league which was attended by some of the university’s most competitive orgs. Foremost of these events is the Apollo 10 tournament, with participants not only from the Metro, but from the provinces as well. It showcased the talents of some of the region’s toughest teams in the open division and budding prospects in the beginner’s division. The intense two-day tournament culminated in an awards night/after-party; and DUO knows how to party.
UP DUO has also fielded teams in local tournaments and leagues picking up valuable experience and developing a greater familiarity of the game along the way. Most recently the kids of Balara Hills have competed in their first international tournament: Spirits 2010, and had a good outing in terms of play and spirit, especially considering that many have been playing for less than a year. With the consistent influx of young talent, sustained passion for the game and the continued guidance from veteran players, surely soon enough the team would be a force in the local scene.
DUO is open to anyone interested in learning ultimate. There are no requirements other than an applicant's good-natured competitiveness, dedication and all around spirit-of-the–game.
Find us at the north wing of the library before trainings and on the fields of sunken garden during. There's a lot more to DUO than ultimate but there's no way you're finding out about them just by reading about us.
